5 things I wish I knew before turning Pro….
Written by Asha Philip
As a kid I used to dream about what life would be like as a professional track athletes… travelling the world, winning Olympic medals, working with major brands. Whilst for some that is the case, over the course of my career I realise there is so much I didn’t know but I wish I had known - as it would have saved me a lot of heartache, anxiety and potentially missed opportunities.
So here’s my 5 things I wish (my younger self) knew before turning pro….
1) You Are The Chief.
Run your life like you’re a business (because you are!). It will change your outlook, your productivity and the opportunities you create for yourself.
At times it’s easy to just go with the flow of your career in sports, as its something that you first did as a child, just for enjoyment or for a hobby - but when you realise this is now your career, and the way you earn a living - not saying enjoyment goes out the window (if you know me personally you know I could NEVER say that)… BUT you do have to recognise that just like any corporate job or business, you have to make the right decisions and build your operations so everything can work together toward success. So be the CEO of your career.
2) Popularity is like the weather
When you’re up, performing well, winning races, championships and titles - don’t be surprised when you’re the people’s champ.
But when you’re down, performances are not great, perhaps your injured - don’t be surprised that no one is talking about you, or even reaching out.
Popularity comes and goes, it’s part of the game. BUT the most important thing is to ensure you’re value is found in who YOU KNOW YOU ARE and not anyone else opinion of you or your talent.
3) Save. Spend. Save.
Money comes and goes. Brand deals will come, and they will go. So be sure to save for your future.
Consider getting a pension for you to pay into. Make investments, and build yourself up financially when you can.
However don’t live in a cave. It’s okay to enjoy your life, you work so hard so make sure on this journey as an athlete you enjoy the ride (being a pro athlete doesnt last forever).
Find balance. Enjoy today and save for tomorrow.
4) Build a team you TRUST
It’s not every big agent, big brand or big coach that is going to be the best fit for you. It’s about working with people who genuinely care for your well-being, are good at their jobs and will be a true partner for your career, dreams and hopes.
So take the necessary time to find these people, and once you have them value you.
5) Embrace the rollercoaster.
Your career will be up, down, left & right. Your worst moments turn into your best moments and vice versa! The most important thing is that you keep going, keep beliveing and always find a way to move forward.
That is the best way to stay in the game!
