The Financial Realities of Pro Athletes

Written by Deji Akande

When most people think of life as a professional athlete, it's all too easy to assume that every athlete is living the high life, surrounded by luxury, wealth, and 20 sponsors! However, the stark reality is far removed from this perception. The hard truth is…. many professional athletes are not swimming in riches, and the majority of sports do not offer multi-million dollar contracts like those in football (soccer for our friends in the U.S), basketball, or the NFL. So today, we'll jump into the financial challenges faced by athletes and the importance of staying focused amid outside noise.

The Reality Check

While superstar athletes across the NBA, Premier League and NFL make headlines for their astronomical playing contracts, they represent only a small fraction of the athlete population. The sports landscape is vast and varied, with many sports that receive significantly less media attention and funding. Let’s keep it really real for a second… for every athlete signing a multi-million-dollar contract, there are numerous others in less popular sports struggling to make ends meet…

In sports like gymnastics, track and field, swimming, and even lower-tier professional leagues, athletes often face financial challenges that are a far cry from the perception of wealth. Many athletes in these sports work jobs on the side, rely on sponsorships that might cover equipment and travel expenses, and live a lifestyle that requires careful budgeting.

The Distraction of Outside Noise

Athletes are constantly bombarded with images of their peers living seemingly extravagant lives. This pressure to keep up with the image can be overwhelming and lead to a sense of inadequacy at times. The distractions caused by comparing one's own financial situation to that of others can hinder an athlete's focus on their craft.

It's important for athletes to remember that everyone's journey is unique. Focusing on personal growth, skill development, and consistent effort is far more important than measuring success solely by financial status. True fulfillment comes from honing one's skills, setting and achieving goals, and making a meaningful impact within their sport, which can of course impact life & finances too!

Navigating Financial Challenges

For athletes navigating the challenges of financial uncertainty, it's crucial to adopt a practical and disciplined approach:

  • Financial Literacy: Athletes should invest time in understanding personal finance. Learning to manage income, set budgets, and make informed financial decisions can help ensure a more stable future.

  • Diversification: Relying solely on a single source of income (e.g your sports career) can be risky due to the potential for injuries or a decline in performance. It should become more common practice for athletes to think about 2nd and 3rd streams of income whilst their still performing in sport - whether that’s starting a business or side hustle, leveraging social media / influencer, sponsorship opportunities, and more - it’s all about creating those safety nets and building valuable skills for the future.

  • Seeking Guidance: Consulting with financial advisors and accountants who specialize in working with athletes can provide tailored advice on money management, investments, and tax planning.

  • Mindset Shift: Athletes should focus on their journey and the progress they're making rather than getting caught up in the perception of others' success. Comparisons can be demoralizing and counterproductive.

  • Leveraging Networks: Building strong relationships within and outside of the sports community can lead to opportunities for sponsorships, endorsements, and collaborations that help alleviate financial pressures.

The reality is that the sports world is diverse, with many athletes facing challenges that demand resilience, adaptability, and a disciplined approach to money management. Athletes should concentrate on their own journey, setting goals, and refining their skills rather than allowing outside noise to distract them.

By prioritizing personal growth, we can find satisfaction and success in their careers - which will lead to new opportunities to make money too! Be encouraged!
